Dear Parents                         Issue: 18                                                                                 2nd March 2016


A very sincere thank you to all families who helped and supported our Church Gate Collection. We raised a total of €877.


Canine Buddies visited Mr. Wallace’s class yesterday. The children learnt how to become responsible pet owners and dog detectives.  They will also visit Mrs Hennessy’s classes after the Easter.


The next Parents Council Meeting will take place this evening at 8pm. All parents welcome to attend.


Tomorrow Thursday is World Book Day. The aim of World Book Day is to celebrate the joy of reading. Every child will receive a €1.50 book token which can be exchanged for a €1.50 book or if they prefer €1.50 off any book costing more than €3.99.


To celebrate Engineers Week, Ms. Tyrrell our Science Co-ordinator has invited two engineers (Julian Drapiewski and Angelo Greco) to provide workshops for some classes on Thursday and Friday.


The Public Health Nurse will carry out screening (hearing, vision & colour vision) for Junior Infants and any new children who enrolled this school year on Friday, the 4th, Wednesday the 9th and Friday the 11th.  Consent Forms were distributed. Please return all forms to class teacher as soon as possible.


Seachtain na Gaeilge is starting next week. A wide variety of activities are currently being planned. All the children and staff will speak in Irish throughout the week. Prizes will be given to children who will make an extra effort.


The Abbey Theatre & Baboró will present Me, Mollser; a monologue play which introduces The Plough and the Stars by Sean O’Casey based on the 1916 Easter Rising to 4th, 5th & 6th class on Monday, 7th of March. Many thanks to the Parents Council who have financed this workshop.


Sixth class girls and their parents are invited to the final session of the Confirmation Programme will take place in Coláiste an Chláirín on Wednesday the 9th of March.


If you wish to order Confirmation Class Photo, please forward €20 by Friday the 11th of March.


First Confession for 2nd class will take place on the 14th of March at 11am in the school. Parents are invited to attend if they wish.


Students from Colaiste an Chláirín have invited the three senior classes to attend a one hour tour to commemorate the 1916 Rising.




March 15th 2016 has been designated Proclamation Day for schools in Ireland.  All schools will commemorate and reflect upon the events of 100 years ago. The school is a hive of activity at the moment as all the children are currently doing projects based on various themes which they will share and showcase to the school community on that day. The day will include a Flag Raising Ceremony. Further details in next newsletter.


Children will be getting their Easter Holidays on Wednesday, the 16th of March at 11.45am. Children do not have to wear their school uniform on Wednesday. School will re-open on Monday, the 4th of April.       


The Community Council has invited the Medieval Town Band to lead the St Patrick’s Day Parade and to perform a recital at the viewing stand.  The parade will take place on Thursday, the 17th of March, after the 11am mass.  Children from 2nd to 6th class have worked very hard for this event, so we hope to see your support by being present on the day.  Your co-operation in the following matters is an essential part of this day. All children in the band are requested:

  • To meet in the school at 10.00am
  • To bring their instruments
  • To wear they hair in plaits, if possible
  • To make sure they have comfortable shoes or runners (no boots or plimsolls)
  • To wear two layers, vests or t-shirts under their band uniforms
  • Children from 3rd up to 6th Class are to wear their navy tights.
  • Second class will be provided with skin coloured tights.


Second class and parents are invited to the next Do This In Memory of Me Mass this Sunday, the 20th of March at 11am.


Ms. Sheridan and Ms. Tyrrell are organising an Easter Fun Camp in the school from Monday to Friday the 21st to the 25th of March.  All queries regarding camp need to be directed to the camp leaders in rooms three and five.


Mr. Wallace and Mrs. Hallissey are selecting a team to participate in the Pioneer Table Quiz Competition which will take place in the Ard Rí Hotel Tuam on Saturday, the 26th of March at 12pm.


Children in 3rd class will be attending Swimming Lessons in Tranquillity in the Raheen Woods Hotel from Monday to Friday, the 18th to the 22ndt of April. The fee is €25.
