Dear Parents                                               Issue: 17                        24th of February 2015

The sixth class debating team competed in round two of the Sister de Lourdes Debating Competition against Doorus National School. The motion for debate was “Media is a leading cause of violence in today’s society”. Our team opposed the motion but unfortunately did not qualify to the final. A sincere thank you to Mrs. Murray who coached them so eloquently. It was a great learning experience for all the children.

A very sincere thank you to all families who supported our recent Book Fair. Books were purchased to the sum of €2,082.25. As a result of this amount, the school will receive 50% of books from the Book Fair or 20% in cash. Special thanks to Mrs. Hallissey who coordinated the whole event.

The Department of Education is in the process of creating a database. Forms have been distributed to every child. We are still awaiting the return of eight forms. Please return immediately.

The staff are currently implementing phase one of the Food Dudes Programme under the guidance of the co-ordinator Mrs Hennessy and her class (the Healthy School Committee). This programme aims to encourage children to become healthy eaters by eating more fruit and vegetables. There are two phases for the Junior Division (Junior Infants up to Mrs. Hennessy’s Third Class and the Senior Division (Ms Monaghan’s Third class up to sixth class) with a slight variation.  In phase one of the Junior Division children receive free fruit and vegetables for 15 days and are rewarded with stickers and prizes for eating these foods. Phase two is where children are rewarded with certificates of achievement for bringing in and eating fruit and vegetables from home as part of their daily lunch diet. In phase one of the Senior Division children get the opportunity to participate in four tasting days where they will taste different fruit and vegetables. Phase two is the same as the Junior Division. The children are really enjoying this programme and having a lot of fun.

The six week Literacy Lift Off programme has now commenced in Ms. Treacy’s class. Every child is bringing home a new book each night and parents are asked to read this book with their child. It is very important that Ms. Treacy’s class is in school on time as the programme starts at 8.50a.m.

Mrs. Monson’s class and Mrs. O Reilly’s class are participating in Paired Reading. During this session the older 5th class child reads to the younger child and the younger child reads to the older child. All the children are really enjoying this experience.

Sharon Higgins will continue to provide Zumba Dancing Workshops to all the children over the next two weeks. Many thanks to the Parents’ Council for financing this venture.

Enrolment Forms for new children starting school in September 2015 have been distributed. Please return by this Wednesday, the 25th of February.

The Galway Community Rugby Officer, Wendy Hickey will provide three Rugby Workshops to the children in Ms. Monaghan’s and Mrs. Monson’s classes commencing this Thursday, the 26th of February.

John from the Football Association of Ireland will provide Soccer Workshops to children from Junior Infants to Second class this Friday. He will return at a future date for the remaining classes.

The 6th class girls will be making their Confirmation this Saturday, the 28th February at 12pm. The staff wish Mrs. Murray and the girls a very special memorable day. The girls may come to school at 10.30am on Monday wearing their Confirmation clothes.

The Green School Committee are organising another Cash for Clobber on Tuesday, the 3rd of March. They would like you to help them with a Two Bag Challenge where every family and staff member in the school, take on the challenge to collect two bags of clothes. Please call on extended family, neighbours and friends to help you reach your two bag goal. If you can’t gather two bags we would welcome any amount.

Our Annual Church Gate Collection in aid of the school will take place this Saturday and Sunday, the 1st & 2nd of March. There will be five collection points at the three weekend Masses. We will need 30 parents for 30 minutes before each Mass. We would be very grateful for your support and help once again. If you are available, please tick whichever Mass suits you and return to the school tomorrow or contact the secretary at 844510.

Yours sincerely,       _______________________Teresa Neylon, Principal
