Dear Parents                                              Issue: 21                               25th April 2016

The children in 3rd class really enjoyed their Swimming Lessons in the Raheen Woods Hotel last week. They made great progress.

Owen Diviney as Athlete Mentor is providing a Sky Sports Living for Sport programme to 6th class.  He is supporting them in a class project which will involve the whole school.

The staff have commenced implementing the Literacy Lift Off Programme to Senior Infants in Ms. Tyrrell’s class.  Every child will bring home a new book each night and parents are asked to read this book with their child.

The sixth class pupils are participating in the Spelling Bee Competition again this year. Andrea will represent our school tomorrow, Tuesday, the 26th of April at the County Spelling Bee Championship which will take place in the Salthill Hotel at 11am.

Mr. McDonald will select a Basketball Team to participate in a Basketball Blitz which will be held in Cregmore National School tomorrow, Tuesday, 26th of April from 9.30am – 2.00pm.

The next Parents Council Meeting will take place this Wednesday, the 27th of April at 8pm. All parents welcome to attend.

The Knitting Club and 6th class will feature on the programme Galway County Matters this Thursday, 28th on Irish TV Sky 191.

There will be no school next week as children will be on their Mid-term Break. The school will re-open on Monday the 9th of May.

Tests will be administered to children from 1st class up to 6th class from over the next few weeks. A Grant was received from the Department over the last few years to subsidise the cost of tests. Please forward test fee outlined below to your child’s teacher immediately.

Photographs were distributed to relevant classes on Friday. If you wish to order photos, please complete order form and insert correct amount of money into envelope provided and return to the school before Tuesday, the 10th of May.

Our school has just been notified that we have been awarded our seventh Green Flag which focussed on the theme of Global Citizenship and Energy Revised with an emphasis on Climate Change, Social Justice, Inequality, Trade and Fair Trade. We have already received flags based on the following themes: Litter, Waste, Energy, Water, Travel and Biodiversity. Mrs. Monson and 4 children will attend the Green Flag Award Ceremony in the Radisson Blu Hotel on Thursday the 19th of May at 10.30am followed by lunch. A very sincere thank you to Mrs. Monson our Green School Co-ordinator assisted by Committees in 5th and 6th class. Congratulations to the whole school community who participated in the Green School Programme.

The third Bia Lover Festival of Food will take place in Athenry on the 15th & 16th of June. This year Galway County Council have asked our Community to come together to support this festival, as Athenry has been chosen as a Pilot town for Galway 2020. The Bia Lover organisation want to get our whole school community involved. They brought edible Callendula seeds, soil and pots for every child. All seeds have been sown two weeks ago. By the time the festival comes around every child will have grown an edible plant! These plants will be collated into a large piece of edible art during the festival.
