Dear Parents                                                Issue: 16                                  4th February 2015


The Department of Education are currently creating a database. Forms have been distributed to every child; however, we are still awaiting the return of fifty forms. Forms have been given to these children again today. Please return immediately.


The staff are currently implementing the Food Dudes Programme under the guidance of the co-ordinator Mrs Hennessy and her class (the Healthy School Committee).This programme aims to encourage children to become healthy eaters by eating more fruit and vegetables. There are two phases for the Junior Division (Junior Infants up to Mrs. Hennessy’s Third Class and the Senior Division (Ms Monaghan’s Third class up to sixth class) with a slight variation.  In phase one of the Junior Division children receive free fruit and vegetables for 16 days and are rewarded with stickers and prizes for eating these foods. Phase two is where children are rewarded with certificates of achievement for bringing in and eating fruit and vegetables from home as part of their daily lunch diet. In phase one of the Senior Division children get the opportunity to participate in four tasting days where they will taste different fruit and vegetables. Phase two is the same as the Junior Division. The children are really enjoying this programme and having a lot of fun.


The Parent’s Council wish to thank the school community for supporting the Fun Table Quiz in Dowling’s Bar. The sum of €1,168.25 was raised. The proceeds of fundraisers go towards funding bus fares, workshops for the children etc.


Mr. Wallace and Mrs. Hallissey selected the following two teams to participate in the Credit Union Table Quiz which took place last Sunday: Senior Team: –  Christabel, Giovana, Kayla and Lauren and  Junior Team – Caitlyn, Amy, Ciara and Shandreya, The girls really enjoyed the experience.


Ms. Treacy’s Senior Infants has just commenced a three week Whole Class Intervention Programme entitled Maths Blast. During these weeks your child will get to know numbers, play number games, handle maths equipment and become more comfortable when doing maths.


Ms. Sheridan is providing a Senior Infant Activity Club starting today, the 4th of February from 2.45 – 3.45pm. It will run for 8 weeks at a cost of €25. This course is fully booked up.


Sixth class will attend a Confirmation Retreat presented by the Net Team tomorrow Thursday, the 5th of February in the Pastoral Centre.


Enrolment Forms for new children starting school in September 2015 will be distributed over the next few days.  Please return by Wednesday, the 25th of February. Sharon Higgins will continue to provide Zumba Dancing Workshops to the children in second and third class over the next two weeks. Many thanks to the Parents’ Council for financing this venture.


Our annual Book Fair supplied by Tara Book Company from Kilcolgan will take place next week commencing Monday the 9th of February. This company is highly committed to fostering and encouraging a love of reading in children, and to supporting and promoting Irish authors and publishers.  Children will have an opportunity to view the books on Monday & Tuesday and parents will be invited in from Tuesday to Friday from 9 – 9.45am and from 1.30 – 2.30pm.  Books will be available to suit all pockets. There is no pressure on any family to purchase books. Staff welcome assistance from the Parents Council and parents in running the Book Fair. The Student Council wish to announce that children may come into school dressed as a character in a book on Friday the 13th of February.


Four pupils from Presentation College will be assisting teachers next week as part of their work experience.: Finola, Eimear, Sarah and Nicola.


The sixth class debating team have qualified to the next round of the Sister de Lourdes Debating Competition which will take place in the Oranmore library next Tuesday, the 10th of February. They will compete with Doorus National School. The motion for debate is “Media is a leading cause of violence in today’s society”. Our team will be opposing the motion.


The girls who will be making their Confirmation will have the opportunity of making a special confession in the school on Wednesday, the 11th of February.  The confirmation ceremony will take place on Saturday the 28th of February at 12 o clock.


There will be a Staff Meeting on Thursday week the 12th of February. Children will go home at 1.15p.m on that day.


The next Communion Parish Programme Mass entitled Do This in Memory Of Me will take place on Sunday, the 15th of February at 11am.


There are currently four past pupils on teaching practice over the next few weeks: Andrea, Emma, Roisin and Catherine.


The staff wish to remind you that some children have a severe nut allergy therefore children are not allowed to bring any food out to the yard except fruit/veg at first break.


We advise parents and children to keep a regular eye on our new redesigned website at for regular updates on what is happening in our school.  The website includes many features such as our school diary over the next few weeks, recent school newsletters & photos, blogging from various classes, a translation feature to other languages etc. The Birthday Policy is now uploaded onto the website if you wish to read it in your first language.

Children will have no school on Thursday and Friday the 19th and 20th of February as it is their Mid-Term Break. Children will have a full school day on Wednesday the 18th of February
