Dear Parents                                        Issue: 05                                                                     November 7th 2019

Congratulations to Mrs Hennessy’s 4th class, they were the winners of the trophy for Best Attendance for the month of October!

Green School:

  • Thank you to everyone who dropped in bags for the Cash for Clobber Collection before the mid-term break. The Parents Council earned approximately €400 for all these donations & these funds will be used to fund buses, workshops, treats for different occasions etc.
  • On Monday the Green school are having a Travel Workshop with Cathríona Cunningham (Green Schools co-ordinator).

  • Sincere thanks to everyone for supporting the HALLOWEEN BAKE SALE before the mid-term break. The Students Council presented the Athenry Tidy Towns and Athenry Christmas Lights committees with a cheque for €1,000!!!
  • Thank you also to everyone for supporting the “Trick or Treat for Temple Street” event also held before the mid-term break. The Diversity Committee have sent a cheque for €628 to this very worthy cause.

First Holy Communion:

There will be a First Holy Communion Information evening tonight (Nov 7th) in the pastoral centre, beside the church. It will be held at 7pm and will be 1 hour in duration.

  • On Friday November 8th we will be having a visit from the All-Ireland Camogie champions along with the O’Duffy cup. Sincere thanks to Mrs Burke for organising this! All children may come to school dressed in the Galway colours in honour of this special visit!
  • The school recently received sponsorship of €500 from “Direct Route” the company responsible for maintenance of the Motorway. We have used this money to purchase a new set of jerseys for the school. The girls in 6th class had the opportunity to design the new jerseys. We will put a photo up on the website when the new jerseys arrive.

Peace Proms:

The girls in 5th & 6th classes will participate in Peace Proms this year. Our pupils will perform their repertoire with other primary schools in the county, in Galway on Sunday January 26th. There will be a rehearsal workshop for the girls in Leisureland on Thursday November 21st

Parents need to purchase tickets to this event, as spectators. The tickets for Galway Peace Proms 2020 went on sale on Friday last (November 1st). You should log on to www.tickettailor.com/events/peaceproms and use the unique code: galsun7pm in order to purchase your tickets.

Science Week:

  • Science week will be celebrated in the school next week. Science Week 2019 will focus on climate action, seeking to help people understand climate change, how science and technology can help us create a positive climate future and the impact we as individuals can have on climate change.
  • Our Green School Committee have already introduced climate change to the children and we had a Climate Action Week in October. The children had to bring in reusable bottles, reusable lunchboxes and use kitchen paper instead of tinfoil and cling-film. The Green School Committee always remind us about what type of rubbish goes into the three bins in each classroom.
  • Miss Tyrrell has arranged for K’nex workshops for 1st, 2nd & 3rd classes. These workshops will take place on Wednesday November 13th.

The school photographer will be here on Tuesday November 12th to take pictures of all the children.

Parent / Teacher Meetings:

Parent teacher meetings for all classes from Junior Infants up to 6th class will take place next Wednesday & Thursday (November 13th & 14th). By now you will have received details of your appointment(s).

All children go home at 1.15pm on these days.

New Board of Management:

The term of the current Board of Management will expire on November 30th 2019. Two parent representatives need to be appointed.

All the children have been given ballot papers this week. Both parents may each choose a mother & a father representative for the new Board of Management. Please make your choice of mother & father representative for the new Board of Management and return the ballot papers to the school before Tuesday of next week (Nov 12th). The counting of the ballot will take place on Wednesday November 13th in the staffroom, at 11am.

Christmas Cards:

The Parents Council have signed our school up with www.designacard.ie this year. Each child has designed their own Christmas Card. Samples were sent home earlier this week. If you wish to order anything, please complete the order form and put it & the exact amount of money due, into the envelope provided. Envelopes must be returned to the office by Tuesday of next week (November 12th). This is to ensure that the printers have sufficient time to process the orders and get them back to the school in plenty of time for Christmas.  A portion of the sales price will come back to the school and be used by the Parents’ Council to fund buses, workshops, treats etc
