Dear Parents                                                    Issue: 18                                 May 4th 2017


Congratulations to the eighty children who had full attendance from January to Easter and can be viewed on our website.


Mrs. Norah Joyce has commenced teaching the Colour String Programme on Fridays to Ms. O Byrne’s Junior Infants, Ms. Tyrrell’s Senior Infants and Ms. Alani’s 1st class.


Bealtaine events take place during the month of May to celebrate creativity in older age. The Athenry Knitting Club have been teaching knitting to Mrs. Monson’s senior classes for the last number of years throughout the whole school year.  The children have learnt to knit a wide variety of items. There was a Craft and Knitting Display with the Knitting Club and 6th class in the Canton Hall yesterday from 8pm to 9.30pm. A variety of their products were on display. The Board of Management are very appreciative of the Knitting Club for sharing their time and skill.  


Tests will be administered to children from 1st class up to 6th class over the next two weeks. A Grant was received from the Department over the last few years to subsidise the cost of tests. Please forward test fee outlined below to your child’s teacher immediately if you have not already done so.

A daily Maths Workshop for one week will be provided for fifth class this week by class teacher and two support teachers (Mrs. O Sullivan and Mrs. Cronin). Maths Blast will commence in Mr. Hanley’s Senior Infants next week for three weeks.


Congratulations to the following children in Mrs. Hennessey’s and Ms. Murray’s class who are prizes winners in the Community Games Competitions. In the Handwriting Competition under 10 age category Ciara Murtagh was awarded 2nd place. In the under 12 age category Alison Mc Greevey was awarded 2nd place and Kerri O Driscoll 3rd place. In the Art Competition  under 10 age category Rachel Doran was awarded 1st place, Sophie Costello 2nd place and Emilia Zabierowsak 3rd place. In the under 12 age category, Sandra Gyamera and Kalina Skrzyszewska were awarded 3rd place.


Mrs Greally’s 4th class participated in the Bizworld School programme run by Bank of Ireland. The children were divided into different companies and created their own products which they will showcase during the Enterprise Town Event in Clarin College this Saturday May 6th from 11am to 4pm.They will also be presented with their Bizworld Certificates by the Master of Dragons, Gavin Duffy at 12.30pm. After the Presentation of Certificates the Scoil Chroi Naofa “Car-Cam” Company (Farah Flannery, Naomi Kelly, Olivia Mackowska, Kaceyleigh Ward & Megan Ward ) will present their product to the Master.

Athenry Enterprise Town is a free event. There will be over 150 business, sports and community groups displaying a wide variety of products and services. Bank of Ireland is calling on those living and working in Athenry to come and support the local businesses and community groups. The Enterprise Town initiative aims to promote enterprise and drive business momentum for local businesses and the wider sports and social community in the Athenry locality by connecting residents with all the town has to offer.

The staff will commence the Literacy Lift Off Programme to Ms Tyrrell’s Senior Infants next week.  Every child will bring home a new book each night and parents are asked to read this book with their child.


Mr. McDonald will select a Basketball Team to participate in a Basketball Blitz which will be held in Cregmore National School on Tuesday, May 16th from 9.30am.


The Green School Committee are working on our next Green Flag, which is based on Global Citizenship (with a focus on the Marine Environment). They visited the Galway Atlantaquarium for an Explorers Animal Anatomy Workshop” presented by Nóirín Burke before Easter. She will continue with part two of the workshop in the school on Friday May 19th.


Parents Council will finance Bird Watching Workshops presented by Tom Cuffe to some classes from Junior Infants to Second Class from May 22nd to 24th.


Mr. Wallace has selected a number of children to participate in the County Sports which will take place in Dangan on Tuesday, May 23rd.


Dates for Diary

  • First Holy Communion for 2nd class on Sunday, the 28th of May at 12.30pm.
  • Children in 3rd class will attend Swimming Lessons in Tranquillity in the Raheen Woods Hotel from Monday to Friday, May 29th to June 2nd at a cost of €25.
  • Reception Meeting for parents of new pupils for September 2017 on Wednesday, June 14th at 8pm.
  • Open afternoon for new Junior Infants on Thursday, June 15th from 12.30 – 1.30pm.
  • Corpus Christi Procession on Sunday June 18th after 11am Mass.
  • Active School Week from Monday to Friday June 19th to 23rd.
