Grandparents Day:

Sincerest thanks to the following parents who served refreshments to all the visiting grandparents that came to the school on Grandparents Day last week: Karen Brackin, Leona Coffey, Louise Byrne, Eiranne Heffernan and Shirley Lambourn. The day was a great success & we couldn’t have done it without you! Credit Union Quiz:

Congratulations to the Junior & Senior teams who took part in the Credit Union Quiz in Clarin college on Sunday afternoon. They did the school proud! Sincere thanks also to Mr Hanley who has been coaching them all year.

Enrolments for September 2020:

  • The Open Night for parents of children due to start school in September 2020 will take place tonight Thursday February 6th at 8pm in the school hall. Enrolment Forms will be handed out to parents at the open night. Completed forms should then be returned to the school by Friday February 21st
  • Enrolment forms for the Boys National School were handed out to 1st class boys, a few weeks ago. Please complete the forms and return them to the Boys National School as soon as possible, if you have not done so already.

Annual Book Fair:

Our annual Book Fair supplied by Tara Book Company from Kilcolgan is taking place next week from

Date: Monday February 10th to Friday 14th                       Times: 9am – 10.15a.m

  • All the children will have an opportunity to view the books over the course of the week.
  • Books will be available to suit all pockets.
  • There is no pressure on any family to purchase books.
  • The cost of books will be rounded to the nearest € Euro.

Books can be purchased in any of the following ways:

(a) The children all received a Book Fair Flyer today. This includes an Order Form on the back. Please complete form and enclose money in sealed envelope with your Child’s name and Teacher’s name, and give it to class teacher.

(b) Parents may come into the school in the morning, collect their children and go to the book fair together

(c) Children can bring money & go to the book fair themselves

Sincere thanks to the following parents who have very kindly volunteered to run the book fair during the week: Deirdre Leech, Eiranne Heffernan, Leona Coffey O’Brien, Karen Brackin, Susan Finnerty, Joanne Melia Costello, Noelle Hardiman, Mary Claire Doyle and Rachel Moore.

To celebrate and mark the Book Fair event the author Patricia Forde, (author of “The Wordsmith” and “Mother Tongue”) will provide workshops for 4th up to 6th class on Monday February 10th. The Parents’ Council will finance these workshops.

The Lunch Bag:

We are very excited to announce that “The Lunch Bag” service will be coming to our school. The healthy school lunch delivery service will be available in the school from Friday February 14th. As an introduction to the service on Tuesday February 11th ALL children in the school will be bringing home a free €10 voucher off the service, along with a sample lunch and information on how to register for the service. This voucher gives you the opportunity to try out the service with no obligation. For more information see www.thelunchbag.ie.

Confirmation Programme:

  • Reconciliation for Confirmation girls on Friday February 14th from 6-9pm.
  • Confirmation for 6th class girls will take place on Saturday, February 15th at 2.30pm.

All of these services will take place in Athenry church.

  • Follow up session in Pastoral centre or church on Friday February 28th at 6pm

Public Information Evening on Crime Prevention in Athenry:

A public information meeting will be held on Crime Prevention in Athenry and your attendance would be appreciated. Monday Feb 17th at 7pm in the Raheen Woods Hotel. Please respond if you can attend to Cllr Shelly Herterich Quinn on 087 2871355.

Half Day for In Service training:

  • There will be a half day on Thursday March 26th to facilitate further staff training on the new Primary Language Curriculum. All children will go home at 1.15pm.

Mid-Term Break:

  • The Mid-Term break is from Mon Feb 17th to Fri Feb 21st. Children have a full school day on Friday February 14th.

General Reminders:

  • Punctuality: The staff of Scoil Chroí Naofa consider punctuality to be of paramount importance. Please ensure that your child is in school by 8.50am (at the latest) to avoid constant disruption to morning prayers and to the beginning of the school day for teachers. Roll call is taken in the early morning, every day.
  • Attendance: The Education Welfare Officer held attendance clinics here in the school yesterday. He reviewed attendance since his last visit.
  • School Uniform: Your co-operation to ensure that your child wears the full school uniform every day is most appreciated. Please remember to label your child’s uniform and all their belongings.
  • Head Lice: Incidences of head lice have been reported in a number of classes this term. Please check your child’s hair regularly and treat immediately, if necessary. Long hair should be tied back.

  • The next Do this in Memory mass for First Communion girls is on Sun Feb 16th at 11am.
  • Bricks4Kids workshops for Junior & Senior Infants on Mon & Tues Feb 24th & 25th – financed by the Parents’ Council
  • Trip to Leinster House for 6th class girls on Tuesday Feb 25th – financed by the Parents’ Council
  • Engineering Workshop “The Dam Busters” for 3rd class up to 6th class
  • Cash for Clobber collection booked for Tuesday March 3rd.
  • Mrs Murray’s Senior Infants attending an Engineering workshop in NUIG on Tues March 3rd. Bus to be financed by the Parents’ Council.
  • First Communion: Saturday May 23rd at 12 noon

  • Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture celebrations: Fire Tour Lighting Ceremony in Athenry Community Park on Friday Feb 7th at 6pm. Visit www.galway2020.ie for further details. Official Opening Ceremony taking place in South Park, Claddagh, Galway city on Saturday Feb 8th at 6pm.
  • Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture souvenir. Mr Ambrose Dolan of “Next Level Marketing” has produced a unique souvenir as a keep-sake for the people of Galway to commemorate winning European capital of culture for 2020. It is a significant moment in the history of the county. The souvenir itself is the Euro Note Souvenir which is one of Europe’s best selling souvenirs. The note is a real Euro note issued by the European Central Bank with all the same quality and security markings that any of our currency bears, except these notes are specific to the Tourist / Souvenir Sector.

The notes will be available to order from the office at a cost of €10, if anyone is interested in ordering one.
