Issue: 10                                                                     May 19th 2021

Dear Parents,

Staff News:

  • Congratulations to Miss Feeney on her recent engagement! All our very best wishes to her & her fiancé!
  • Over the last number of weeks we were lucky enough to have two trainee teachers doing their work placements in our school. It has been a pleasure to work with these ladies and we wish them all the very best with their teaching careers:
    • Rebecca Guinnane in Ms Alani’s Senior Infants
    • Fionnuala de Paor in Mr Hanley’s 1st class
  • We welcome past pupil Cathy Keating back to Scoil Chroí Naofa. Cathy will be working in the school for the next year, under the TUS scheme with Galway Rural Development.

Staff meeting:

There will be a staff meeting tomorrow afternoon (Thursday May 20th). All the children will go home at 1.15pm.

GAA Hurling Coach:

Mr Aidan Claffey the local GAA development officer has started Hurling coaching in the school. He will provide this coaching to Mr Hanley’s class for the next 3 weeks and then Miss Dolan’s class for the remaining 3 weeks of the term.

Standardised Tests:

Standardised Tests will be administered to children from 1st class up to 6th class during the weeks of May 24th to June 4th. Please try to ensure that your child is not absent during these weeks.

County Photos:

  • The photographers from County Photos will be here on Thursday May 27th to take photos of all the children.
  • Proofs of the photos will be sent home with the children, as soon as they are available.
  • Full details on prices and how to purchase will be included with the proof photographs, there is no money to be paid up front and no obligation to buy the photographs once they are taken.

Green School:

  • Sincere thanks to everyone for taking part in the Cash4Clobber collection. Approx €400 was raised and this will be used to fund activities for the children
  • Thank you to all pupils & parents who are supporting our “Walk to school every day for the month of May” challenge. Keep up the good work!!!
    • If you cycle to school, bikes can be locked against the green fence in the top yard
    • If you scoot to school, scooters should also be locked against the green fence in the top yard. If it is not possible to lock your child’s scooter then the safest option is for mom / dad to take the scooter home. Unfortunately it is not possible to store scooters in the classrooms for the day.
  • The Green School committee are having a “virtual” visit from the local Green School travel officer today, who will assess their work on the Travel Theme and all the themes of the Green School’s programme. They will also be submitting a lengthy online application outlining all the Green School work that is done here in SCN. We expect to hear before the end of the school year, if SCN has been awarded with our 9th Green Flag!!!

First Confession / First Communion / Confirmation:

We are still awaiting final clarification in relation to the sacrament celebrations this year. The provisional dates we had received are as follows:

  • First Confession: Wednesday May 26th
  • First Communion: Saturday June 26th
  • Confirmation: Sept / Oct

The last official word the school has received on this, was that the sacraments of Communion / Confirmation were unlikely to take place in May / June and should be deferred until the Autumn. As soon as we get the official details we will let parents know.

Annual Sports Day:

We are delighted to say that (weather permitting) we will be holding our annual sports day in Kenny Park towards the end of June. The day will be organised in line with the public health guidelines. There will be fun activities for the children to take part in and it will be led by the 6th class girls.

Graduation ceremonies:

Unfortunately we cannot have parents in attendance for the graduation ceremonies this year. We will however be videoing the celebrations and the videos will be posted to the school YouTube channel for parents to view:

  • Graduation for 6th class girls will take place on Friday June 25th. This will be the girls’ last day of school
  • Graduation for 1st class boys will take place on Tuesday June 29th.

Please note: for boys transitioning to the boys school and girls transitioning to secondary school, parents need to forward any professional reports to their child’s new school, along with the Enrolment form. Scoil Chroí Naofa will only share information in relation to attendance, end of year school reports and standardised test results with your child’s new school.

New Enrolments 2021 / 2022:

  • Children due to start in Junior Infants on September 1st will be invited into the school for an hour (8.50am to 9.50am) some morning at the end of August. There will be no other classes in the building at the time. This will give the children a chance to see their classroom, meet their teacher and their new classmates.
  • Children who are joining other classes in September will also be welcome to call into the school during this time on the same day to meet the principal and take a look at the school.
  • The exact date will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Diary dates:

  • Monday May 24th: third cycling workshop for 6th class
  • Monday May 24th – Friday June 4th: standardised tests for 1st up to 6th class
